Meet Michael Engelbrecht

When it comes to rugby in the United States, few names resonate as strongly as Michael Engelbrecht—a pioneer and driving force who has left an indelible mark on the sport across the nation. Known affectionately as “Moley,” Engelbrecht’s journey began far from Dallas in Benoni, South Africa. Rugby, his first passion, captured him from a young age, shaping a lifelong commitment that would eventually lead him to reshape the sport here in the U.S.

In the late 1980s through the early 2000s, Engelbrecht made his presence known in the American Super League, where he led the Dallas Harlequins to prominence. A specialist in the back three, Moley was renowned for his integral character, speed, and game sense, making him an invaluable asset on the field. But Engelbrecht’s true legacy began to unfold as he transitioned to coaching, bringing his player-centered approach to youth and professional teams alike.

His coaching career is as remarkable as his playing days, with roles that include guiding the USA Eagles U20s and the West RFU All-Stars, plus extensive involvement in age-grade and collegiate rugby. Moley has since been inducted into the Texas Rugby Union Hall of Fame, a testament to his contributions and enduring influence on the sport. Today, Engelbrecht’s commitment remains unshaken as he returns to the Dallas Harlequins, focusing on player development and fostering a thriving rugby culture. In his role with the Dallas Jackals Academy, he continues to support the next generation of rugby athletes with unparalleled leadership.

Both on the field and away from it, Moley is a welcomed figure in the rugby community, embodying the spirit and dedication that inspire others. We couldn’t be more elated to have his presence tied in with our program. His impact will undoubtedly continue for years to come.
