As one of the top five most popular sports in the world, rugby in America has been around on the rise since the 1870s–a fact that has been overshadowed by the king of the south, American Football. With thousands of clubs across the country, DSR has been itching to get its Pilot and Talent ID camps off the ground. This Fall has created an exciting pathway for young athletes across the DFW area, spanning athletes from many sports from different schools including, Plano and Allen High School, David W. Carter, Jesuit Prep, and all over Oak Cliff. Dallas ISD and surrounding schools have long been a target for rugby to insert itself as Dallas has dominated the sports scene of America, let alone Texas. Besides a bit of athletic competition from Florida and California, Texas is known to be a fire no one can put out. This year, these camps have shown football may merely be king for only a little while longer.
DSR’s first camp hit the ground in the late summer as students made their way back to school, which seemed to be the catalyst for the second camp. Word must have spread, as forty-eight athletes made it out to the second camp. These events allowed participants to showcase their skills, meet new teammates, and gain valuable knowledge and exposure. The turnouts highlighted the regions diversity in talent, and each session was designed to foster a supportive and competitive atmosphere. Because of the densely equipped staff, leaders of Dallas Selects were able to provide student-athletes with a great glimpse of what it means to pursue such a sport at a higher level.
Appearances from players of the recent Dallas Jackals Academy skyrocketed the pace, allowing our younger participants the adjustment in speed needed. The Dallas Selects crashed down hard at Lake Highlands Park benefitting every participant with knowledge ranging from recent national champions all the way back to the Super League era. Key coaches brought a wealth of expertise, like Aaron Rego, Greg Chavez, and Austin Becker, leading our participants through intense drills, combining IQ and skill development.
Together, these events not only identified emerging talents but also built a foundation of our vision to embed club sports within the public schools. With the turnout and success of these initial events, DSR continues to identify top prospects and emerging talents. Also building on a foundation, the vision to embed club sports has already built character among young athletes, driving forward its mission to develop well-guided youth in sports and life.
