Raised in Arlington, Texas, Gregorio Chavez carried passion for sports and community has shaped his journey both on and off the rugby field. Though he initially planned to pursue baseball at the University of North Texas, life had other plans. After a single season of rugby, Greg was hooked—drawn in by the sport’s intensity, camaraderie, and the unique challenges it presented. Starting out in the front row as a Hooker and later moving to Scrum-half, Greg quickly adapted and developed his skills, eventually competing in multiple national tournaments in both 7s and 15s during his college career.

Now in his fourth year of coaching at UNT, Coach Greg brings not only his technical expertise but also a grounded, down-to-earth approach that makes him the charismatic leader his North Texas players are familiar with. Known for his genuine nature, Greg has a gift for forming meaningful connections, especially with those who share his commitment to making a positive impact. His coaching style is deeply personal, valuing every athlete’s journey and pushing each of them to find joy and fulfillment on the field.

In addition to his role at UNT, Greg has proudly coached the high school Jackals academy of Major League Rugby (MLR) and contributed to the senior academy, lending his experience to nurture young talent and build pathways for players aspiring to reach higher levels. His motivation to teach and inspire comes from his own love for the game—a love that goes beyond winning, focusing instead on personal growth, teamwork, and resilience.

Beyond the pitch, Greg embraces a life rooted in family and joy. His wife and young daughter are his greatest sources of inspiration, and he’s dedicated to creating a life filled with love, learning, and laughter for them. He often says his greatest goal is to lead by example, showing his family and athletes alike that life is as much about enjoying the journey as it is about reaching the destination.

As Coach Chavez steps into another year with UNT, the team is thrilled to have him back. With his passion, warmth, and dedication, Greg Chavez is set to make an indelible impact on his players in Denton and the lives of everyone he works with.
